So what are you going to do about it? Nine words one might hear on many an elementary school playground. Unfortunately, the person saying them doesn’t always have the best intentions in mind. They might even involve handing over lunch money. Or you might hear them in a tough guy action movie. Usually when you hear them, you can expect a serious beatdown hopefully by the hero. Yes, they can definitely be used for good or evil.
There is a way we can use those words for good to help motivate ourselves to make the right decision and prioritize what’s really important. It usually starts as a question or a challenge.
I want to run a marathon, a 10k a 5K a triathlon, an Ironman…so what are you going to do about it?
I want to be faster…so what are you going to do about it?
I want to do something I love…so what are you going to do about it?
I want to lose some weight…so what are you going to do about it?
So what are you going to do about it? The answer could mean a major life changing event or something as simple as shutting off the TV, going to bed earlier and getting up early to hit the gym. Sometimes the answer is nothing at all or you will find that it’s something that can be put off for something more important.
The point is that those words can help you gain control; help you prioritize what’s important; help guide planning and execution; and help make you accountable for things you want to change either in your life or maybe someone else’s.
I have used those words often, probably every day, every hour. Every time I face something challenging, I use them to help guide me. I used them a lot, and still do when I think about what I want to accomplish with 1BandID and they help keep me accountable to my customers and my vision for the company.
I use those words in my training. Recently I followed along the USAT age group national championships, spectated at the Timberman 70.3 race and keep taps on friends as they tweet and post their accomplishments. I immediately started thinking about racing more. I have mostly taken this year off with the pending birth of my amazing, life changing son, getting 1BandID started and the distractions that life brings, even as I arrive at a milestone birthday. But I realize how much I miss the energy and excitement that comes with a race. I also miss the focus and structure of training, not to mention how it makes me feel mentally and physically.
I want to improve in the sport of triathlon, a sport I’m very passionate about. I want to complete an Ironman, hopefully more than one. Triathlon means competing, fitness and again, proving something to myself. There is so much to learn and so much to do in my training so I use those words to help guide me in determining where to start, what to do next and what I want to ultimately achieve. I asked myself what is the most important thing I could do to help set me on the right path to that goal. The answer for me was to start working with a coach, Kristine Miller (@kgirltris). She will help me set the right path and do something about my goal.
So what are you going to do about it (#SWAYGTDAI) is going to be a recurring theme. I hope you will follow along. I also hope that you will think about those words. They are the perfect call to arms. Use these words for good instead of evil. Use them to help guide you, prioritize what’s really important and mostly to hold yourself accountable.
What’s your passion, challenge? What question are you asking yourself, and What are you going to do about it?
